Learner Driver Car Insurance - car owned by the learner

Learner Driver Car Insurance - car owned by the learner

Car Insurance for Learner (and New) Drivers

Some learner drivers might be in a position to buy their own car, or perhaps to have a car bought for them, before passing the driving test - and with that comes all the other car owning expenses!

Car insurance is something non of us look forward to getting quotes for, and looking into car insurance policies for a learner or new driver can be seriously scary - with quotes often coming back in the thousands, rather than in the hundreds ....

Traditional car insurance companies might not be the best option when looking to insure a learner on their own car - the specialist car insurance companies below may not be so well known, but you might find they offer just what you are looking for!

See below for 2 big differences in specialist learner driver car insurance policies that you need to look out for - plus offers including: £50 off, or a £20 avaCARgo voucher, when you take out an annual policy using one of our unique codes!

Learner Driver ONLY Car Insurance Policies

With these specialist car insurance policies for learner drivers ONLY - a successful driving test MEANS the policy will end.

You choose the length of the policy to suit you. They can run for a year, months, weeks, days, or even hours - which could be useful if the learner is only driving occasionally*. With an annual policy the learner may be able to start to build their own No Claims Bonus (NCB) - which could help save money when it's time for new quotes.

But the insurance policy will usually end the moment the driving test is passed. If the learner uses their own car for the driving test - they won't be insured to drive home from the test centre. New car insurance quotes will be needed, and a new policy taken out - before getting in and driving again.

*If the car is not insured a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) declaration must be made, and the car cannot be kept or used on a public road until it is insured again

If all this doesn't sound ideal - the next option further down the page might work better for you!

Learner Driver ONLY Car Insurance Policies

  • the policy will end as soon as the driving test is passed, and a new policy will be needed before driving again

Learner AND New Driver Car Insurance Policies

With these specialist car insurance policies for learner AND new drivers - a successful driving test DOES NOT MEAN the policy will end.

With these ANNUAL insurance policies - the policy will last for the whole year, as it will continue if the learner passes their driving test* during the period covered by the insurance policy.

*the Insurance company may need to be informed about this and any other relevant changes, and an Admin Fee may apply to update the policy

This is an amazing benefit - it can help smooth the transition from LEARNER to NEW DRIVER as a new policy isn't needed to continue driving, and it might also help with saving some money!

Car insurance for learner drivers can be cheaper than for new drivers. Learner drivers have to be supervised while driving, and so it makes sense for them to be seen as less of a risk to insure. As soon as the learner passes their driving test they can drive unsupervised, and the higher Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) statistics for young drivers age 17-24, explain why they can be seen as a higher risk to insure.

It's potentially possible to take out an annual car insurance policy as a learner driver not long before taking a driving test, pass the driving test, and then drive for nearly a year before needing to take out a new policy as a 'full licence holder'* - at which point, if there haven't been any insurance claims, there could also be No Claims Bonus (NCB) to use for new quotes.

*always check you understand the small print and restrictions of any policy before accepting any quote

Learner AND New Driver Car Insurance Policies

  • no need for a new policy after passing the driving test
  • may be able to start building a No Claims Bonus (NCB) entitlement before passing the driving test
  • may help save some money on those very expensive car insurance costs during the first years as a new driver

Cons:

  • an Admin Fee may be payable to update the policy details after passing the driving test
  • not all insurance companies offer specialist policies for learner drivers - see below for some that do.

Summary

When getting quotes and comparing what traditional and specialist car insurance companies offer - you might find specialist car insurer companies can offer policies that better meet the needs of a learner driver who has their own car.

There is a big difference between specialist car insurance policies that end when the learner passes the driving test, and those that don't - make sure you compare before choosing the right one for you!

Note: policies will vary from company to company, and some may have requirements that don't work for you, e.g. some insurers may specify a minimum age for the supervising driver or a maximum age for the learner - make sure you check the relevant details, and are clear it provides the cover needed before deciding which quote to accept.
