The Official Highway Code book
Following one of its biggest overhauls since it was first introduced - many changes and new rules came into force in January 2022.
Many of the rules in The Highway Code are legal requirements so it is important to make sure you are up-to-date with the latest version - to avoid getting penalties and / or fines yourself, and to support your learner driver to pass their driving test!
It's essential reading for ALL road users - pedestrians, horse-riders, cyclists and motorcyclists, as well as learner and fully qualified drivers.
The Official Highway Code, as well as Know Your Traffic Signs and The Official DVSA Guide to Driving the essential skills, continue to provide the material for the questions in the driving theory test, and to be the most comprehensive sources of the information and knowledge needed to pass the practical driving test, and for a lifetime of safer driving.
Changes include:
- 10 sections of The Official Highway Code were updated, with 50 rules being added or updated.
- A ‘hierarchy of road users’ and new ‘H’ rules were introduced - new responsibilities for all road users towards those more vulnerable than themselves.
- A change of priority - meaning other road users should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross the road at junctions, as well those using pedestrian crossings or waiting to use a zebra or parallel crossing.
- Updated guidance for drivers and motorcyclists on safe distances and speeds for passing more vulnerable road users - including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
